I tried for way too long, and finally asked a friend who ENJOYS mathmatics.
He says the answer is not a whole number- well no wonder I couldn't get it. He also said it was simple algebra.

Jim's answer:
"Using your puzzle this is what I did:
First number: X + 1
Second number: X
Third number: 2X + 1
Fourth number: 2X + 1
Fifth number: 2X + 1 – 2 = (2X – 1)
Sixth number: 2X + 1 – 2 – 2 = (2X – 3)
The cumulative total of the above = 10X -1 and we are told that equals 33 – Therefore 10X -1 = 33; so 10X = 34 and X = 3.4
If you work it backwards is works:
First number: 3.4 + 1 = 4.4
Second number: 3.4
Third number: 6.8 + 1 = 7.8
Fourth number: 6.8 + 1= 7.8
Fifth number: 6.8 + 1 – 2 = (6.8 – 1) = 5.8
Sixth number: 6.8 + 1 – 2 – 2 = (6.8 – 3) = 3.8
And that Totals to 33
This was fun."
