:? HI ALL. IVE GOT A PROBLEM WITH ONE OF MY CHICKENS. THE OTHER DAY SHE WOULD NOT EAT, DRINK OR MOVE WHEN I PICKED HER UP TO CHECK WHAT WAS WRONG. I WAS SHOCKED TO JUST FEEL RIB GAGE. SHE IS NOW BEING TREATED BY A VET, COUPLE OF JABS, BUT HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT HAS CAUSED IT. WE FEED THEM LAYERS PELLETS, CORN, LIVE FOOD FROM OPEN COMPOST, AND THEY HAVE ABOUT 1/2 THE GARDEN TO WALK FREELY IN. ALSO, SINCE THIS HAS HAPPEN 3 OF THE OTHER CHICKS HAVE LOST ALL FEATHERS ROUND THEIR NECK. IS THIS TO DO WITH BEING TOP CHICK OR IS IT MORE THAN THAT? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT AS I THOUGTH WE WERE DOING THINGS RIGHT. ANY HELP PLEASE.

Chuckie. If she is being treated by a vet, and he has "no idea" ........ How on earth will we know? We could guess ...... like worms, bad feed or water, some type of virus/desease, etc. Seems like they are living in a good environment, but really, we don't know what their real living conditions are. You must be more specific ........ What are their droppings like? What part of the country are you from? What is your weather like?

chuckie:
Does the Vet you took your bird to treat birds, chickens, poultry or pets and cage birds? It can make a big difference.
What did you use to treat for worms and is the treatment given by the vet helping the chicken?
Chickens can get so many problems and you're lucky if your birds happen to get one of the common ones.
Weight loss like you describe is called "going light" and usually is a parasite problem but it could be something more serious like a tumor or any number of other things. Is the bird eating well? What do you feed them for their main diet? Has this bird been laying and are the others laying now?
I don't know whether we can help guess what the problem is, but keep us posted.

Chuckie. After re-reading my post, I apologise for sounding a little strong. . I was, more or less, trying to make a funny. But it didn't come out that way.

Another question.... When you say "chucks", do you mean chuckar partridge? Or, are you calling your chickens by the sound they make? :) Anyways, like James said .... keep us informed on your birds. Especialy if you learn what it is. Some day, you will help someone else if their birds have the same symptoms yours had. Just be sure their feed is right and they get plenty of fresh water every day ........
